This course is designed for those who intend to make a career in streams such as Travel, Nature, Wildlife, Documentary and Event Photography.

The course is densely packed and assumes a very high level of interest and motivation amongst the students.

Learning is facilitated through a mix of lectures, slideshows, demonstrations, outdoor and studio assignments, critique sessions, workshops, field-trips, guest lectures and seminars.

At Light & Life Academy, there is no concept of “failing”; Our faculty constantly engages with students, providing inputs that cater specifically to individual learning curves. This ensures that every student makes the grade.

  • Aesthetics of Photography

  • In-depth study of Natural Light and its Qualities, including Moonlight.
  • Intro to Artificial Lights - Portable Flash and Continuous Light Sources

  • Post Production 1 - Essentials

Every area of study above has its own time-bound assignments with critique and grading. The faculty also offers collective and individual inputs while students are working on their assignments.

Once students successfully complete Section 1, they move on to an intensive study of the following areas of specialisations.

Location Portraiture

Learn Indoor and Outdoor Location Portraiture in Natural and Artificial Light (Portable Flash and Continuous Light Sources with applicable light modifying accessories).

Travel & Nature Photography

Travel: Students learn how to capture places and events- Culture and Heritage.

Nature: Students learn how to capture Landscapes of all kinds, both in Colour and Black & White. Additionally, they will also learn how to capture medium close ups and close ups of all subjects in nature using natural and artificial lights.

Every topic will be covered through lectures, slide shows, demos followed by time-bound assignments with critique and grading.

LLA will conduct seminars in the following topics to widen the students’ photography horizon.

Photojournalism

Exploring various techniques, processes and approaches used in Fine Art Photography.

Event and Wedding Photography

Learning to approach event/wedding photography with the intent to convey a complete story.

Aerial and Drone Photography

Learning the techniques of photographing subjects from an aerial vantage point.

Fine Art Photography

Exploring various techniques, processes and approaches used in Fine Art Photography.

Astro Photography

Understanding the techniques involved in capturing astronomical objects, celestial events and areas of the night sky.

Curating & Presenting Images

Understanding how to select, sequence, format images to suit various platforms with the intention to exhibit.

Business Aspects of Photography.

Learning how to navigate the challenges involved in the business aspects of professional photography.

These sessions will have lectures, slide shows, real life case studies, followed by Q & A. Students will be equipped to then explore these areas on their own.

On successful completion of Sections 1, 2 & 3, students will be eligible to receive a Diploma in Documentary, Travel and Nature Photography.

For those who have successfully completed Sections 1, 2 & 3, and would like to explore other areas of photography, Light & Life Academy offers the following workshops.

Wildlife Photography

Understand the nuances involved in wildlife photography with hands-on experience of photographing subjects in the wild.

Documentary Videography

Learn to communicate using videos - this workshop will equip the students with the ability to create a cohesive piece of video communication in the documentary filmmaking space.

These sessions will be conducted through lectures, slideshows, demos(wherever required), case studies and assignments.

Note: These workshops will be available at an additional fee.

Evaluation is done on a continuous basis, on assignments submitted and tests administered. The students are expected to clear every single assignment/test with a minimum score of 70%.

Light & Life Academy believes that every student can make the grade, and the student is given enough opportunities and assistance from the faculty to achieve the minimum grade for every assignment.

Note: The policy of the Academy is to constantly update the course content. This is based on developments in the field/ industry (technical, aesthetic & communication).The course content, schedules and methodology are therefore subject to change even as the course is in progress.

Course Details

Section 1, Section 2 & Section 3: INR 3,50,000/-

Section 4 Optional
• Documentary Videography: INR 25,000/-
• Wildlife Photography: Fee subject to the number of people opting for the workshop

Refundable security deposit: INR 10,000/-

GST as applicable will be payable on the fee.

The fees include

  • Transport from Ooty (designated pick up points) to Academy and back on days when the student is required to be on campus for a class/ critique session / demo.
  • Lunch, tea / coffee on days when the student is required to be on campus for a class/ critique session / demo.


Additional expenses

  • Personal equipment, as specified by the Academy (the list of equipment needed, will be given along with the offer of admission letter).
  • Personal equipment maintenance / repairs / insurance / books / stationery.
  • Personal expenses on accommodation, food, personal travel etc.
  • Overnight field trips.
  • Cost of making archival prints, in case of exhibition on campus or at locations off-campus.
  • Expenses involved while working on projects and portfolio.

Admission is open to any graduate (with a minimum of 15 years of formal education), who is over 20 years of age.

In rare cases, exceptions will be made at the discretion of management, for those who have not completed a UG degree, but have substantial work experience.

The course requires candidates to have their own DSLR/Mirrorless camera with lenses ranging from wide to tele. A detailed equipment list will be provided once the candidate is accepted.

Note: Light and Life Academy does not provide hostel facilities. However, assistance will be provided by the academy in finding appropriate accommodation.

Admission

Admission is on a first-come-first-served basis and involves a three-step process:

1. Online Application Review by Light and Life Academy.
2. Online Interview with teaching and administrative staff.
3. Online or Personal interview with Director(s).

The Academy notifies admission status soon after the interviews.

Step 1: Fill the online application form.

The following documents are needed during the application process. All files uploaded to be under 1 MB.

  • Profile Picture: Digital file of a recent passport size photograph against a plain background (Note: ‘Selfies’ not accepted)
  • Digital copies(PDF/Jpeg) of Educational certificates.
  • Reference letters (Optional).
  • Portfolio: 20 images made by the candidate.

Note: Once the application process has been initiated, the form can be accessed by using the unique URL sent to your email id.

Step 2: Complete online payment of application fee.

Upon payment of Rs.1000/- + GST, the application process is complete.

Once step 1 & step 2 are completed, you will be informed about the next step within 2 working days.
