The time I’ve spent in LLA has been the best year of my life. The sessions, explanations, critiques, constant feedback, the way we were taken care of, the love we got, all the fun we had, just amazing and we truly loved it. I constantly keep looking for reasons to come back to my College, my Home- Light & Life Academy.

Varun Saraswat
Being an Alumnus of this school I can definitely say it is India’s premier Photography school. All the courses here are mentored under Mr. Iqbal Mohamed which made the learning even more worthwhile. The foundation of the course is very strong. It has one of the most amazing faculties visiting the campus regularly. The institute is well equipped and has a very hospitable staff. The best part of this school was meeting students who come from different parts of the country, which added to my learning experience. Last but not least this school will always play a special part in my creative and personal journey. I made many good friends here and have many fond memories from my time here in Nilgiris.
I couldn’t have gone to a better place to study photography.
– Varun Saraswat, Alumnus, Batch 15

LLA was the perfect turning point in my life. Learning at LLA – from the people, faculty, and students has changed my thinking completely. Hoping to be a better photographer I joined LLA, to learn, observe and practice the Art – Now I leave this place as a better person and a better photographer.

Prathiksha.M.K, Alumnus, Batch 17
I never knew that I could learn so much in six months. My passion for photography grew from just a hobby to being a professional. We’ve had ups and downs in this course where we wanted to learn more and there was not enough time to do it. But overall it’s been an amazing roller coaster ride and I loved it every bit. The best part was that it was a small group of students and we got close and became a family.
– Prathiksha.M.K, Alumnus, Batch 17
Priyanka Rozario
We all know what we learn is important, but I’m sure from whom we learn and where we learn it is more important. The time I spent in light and life academy would be the best learning experience of my life so far, the place never misses a chance in giving you the best options in photography. If you’re looking for a place to passionately learn photography and gain a lot of experience doing so then this is it, look nowhere else.

The course content is comprehensive – ranging from enhancement of my observation skills, enhancing compositions, fundamentals, to advanced techniques and finally a choice from a spectrum of specializations. The session about visual art was so interesting, especially connecting the compositions of paintings with photography. It gave a totally new perspective to observe art, whatever kind it is. How various artists with their crazy passion played an important part in the evolution of art. I never expected I would learn something related to paintings or other visual art form in a photography college! And this session was really wonderful!

Nutan, Alumnus, Batch 18
The class today changed the way I look at photography and how light affects the frame I am capturing. We were made to understand how important a role light plays. The session was very interactive and fun. The way Iqbal Sir explains and makes it humourous at the same time makes it worth mentioning. In fact, we were looking forward to the session with Iqbal Sir and it was beyond our expectations. We are impatiently waiting to shoot with sir and learn under his guidance.
– Nutan, Alumnus, Batch 18
Satish Kumar Raju, Alumnus, Batch 6
LLA is a hub for photographers. It is the place I go to, to see groups of photographers discussing an image and continuously talking about the elements that make the image look good and how to improvise a shot. This is a place that tunes a person to appreciate life and the art of living through photography. LLA is not only a learning experience for students, but for the faculty as well!
– Satish Kumar Raju, Alumnus, Batch 6
Hrithwiq, Alumnus, Batch 18
The man who lights up the darkness’. Day one of Iqbal sir’s class was so amazing that we literally didn’t want it to end. He is the magician with the camera as a wand who can change even the place we say is not beautiful into places that look like Ibiza. His optimism not only encourages us to be great photographers but also encourages us to be great human beings. He is the teacher I have been looking for my entire life.
– Hrithwiq, Alumnus, Batch 18

Anand Subramaniam, Alumnus, Batch 17
As a former engineering student, turning my life towards the world of photography was a hard choice. So I chose LLA as my palette to nurture my art side. Every faculty walked into our life and taught us photography from their point of view. With a wide spectrum of learning, we became, in the end, professional photographers. Confident and with the mindset to capture the world in our canvas, we continue our journey.
– Anand Subramaniam, Alumnus, Batch 17

In a display like this, it’s very difficult to single out any one talent. What I do find amazing is that LLA is one photography institute that has managed to make so many different styles emerge. It takes a lot to impart skill / knowledge without stamping on creativity! Well done.

Having known architect Jaisim’s work, this place is a complete package of the way of working. Very beautiful, surprising in every small space. The most important thing I liked was how he understood the requirements of the campus and gave the user what exactly was wanted. Also the scale is very friendly. “A Paradise out of Nowhere”.

The faculty not only taught us about the aesthetics of wildlife and nature photography but the technical aspects and morals of this field. To learn from the man who directed and shot National Geographic documentaries we grew up watching was more like an empowerment for me because wildlife and nature photography are two of my ultimate goals. His passion and love for nature and animals are second to none. It inspired and motivated everyone who attended the session.
He also talked about the right way of traveling and documenting different cultures we come across
– Sai Sreerang, Alumnus

During the session, the faculty explained, in detail, how a fashion shoot is done, right from how the concept or idea is conceived to the day the shoot is done and how it is done.
We learned about the importance of colour palettes, props, accessories, and overall how to convey the theme and concept with those colours, props, backgrounds.
He also gave in depth insights on the types of fashion shoots that are done like editorial, advertisements etc. The importance of teamwork, coordinating with all the artists (like model, makeup, stylist) was also mentioned.
During the demos, he showed us how he shoots by coordinating along with all the team members, making changes according to the opinion of the team.Overall it was a great session, which gave each one of us a lot to learn from.
– Neeraj R Krishnan, Alumnus

Ankit was very appreciative in the critique and was also very much on point with the rectification we could have done with those photographs. He didn’t just want us to work on our photography for the sake of completion of our course in Light & Life Academy but he also wanted us to be prepared for the outside world as a professional photographer. He suggested ideas and showed us opportunities and paths we could take to work and excel in the field of photography.
– Kathak Mithra, Batch 20
Rishitha Devi, Batch 18
The one thing that stood out to me about Sukil sir is that while critiquing an image, he only adds improvements and does not change the concept as a whole. He also tells us the reason behind the improvements and I can really see the change that his inputs bring to my images. Overall, it was a great learning experience and I managed to learn how small tips really made big improvements!
– Rishitha Devi, Batch 18
Jagadish Rana, Batch 13
Ajit’s teaching patterns are Unique. He used to give us an idea about how to achieve the right image in terms of lighting & detailing, but never told us what to do on sets. He is allowed each one of us to experiment with different techniques we learnt. But before finding the right one, we explored many other ways which failed, but those failed methods would succeed on different products.
– Jagadish Rana, Batch 13
Rejoy Krishnan, Batch 15
We have heard a lot about Sathish Sir’s way of teaching and style of making complicated topics easy to understand. It was important to pay attention throughout the session. We loved the way that he not only taught us the techniques, but also shared his experiences and learning as a professional photographer. We enjoyed his sessions a lot!

Ankit Sir is calm, and explains everything well, through his experiences to ensure that all of us understand the concepts. Every bit and pixel of our images are clearly clarified during the critique. – Adithyavaradhan, Batch 17
Priyanka Rozario
The automobile session by Iqbal Sir was no less than any other session done by sir. He has always been the best at making his students “understand”, “observe” and “learn” everything we need to know. And the best part of having Iqbal Sir is that once we are part of his class we never have to worry about forgetting what we’ve learnt. I’m sure it’ll last forever as he would in our lives.
– Priyanka Rozario
Hem Desai
Sukil sir was a knowledgeable teacher. He was so patient that he solved all my doubts even if I asked it 2 or 3 times. He taught me perfection in composition and changed my perspective on framing. His critique was the best part of the assignment because he showed us our mistakes and helped us improve.
– Hem Desai
Abhishek.C.R.
Satish Sir is a genuine student of Iqbal sir, His way of speaking is the same of our guru. Technically we feel we know it all, theory has been made understandable by him. He is silent and his humour is silent as well. We burst out in laughter after a pause before we understood the humour. He is patient in revealing the surprises hidden behind photography. Those formulas and science are now our toys to play with, he has exposed us to a better level of photography.
– Abhishek.C.R.

The first few minutes of interacting with Punya ma’am felt like being hit with a tsunami of enthusiasm. The energy is infectious and inspiring. Students from Mangalam School of Architecture and Planning, Kottayam, Kerala.
The architecture of Light & Life Academy effectively shows how a campus should be planned on a highly sloped terrace. One of the most striking features is the use of colours, perfectly merging with the surroundings. As architecture students, we see the optimum utilization of natural light in creating the perfect atmosphere for photographers.

It was a really beautiful experience and probably the most memorable one, the way Aneev sir went on with the whole session. He has helped me widen my perspectives and possibilities when it comes to creative freedom.

Satish Kumar Raju – Faculty
If there’s anything about photography, Iqbal Sir knows about it. Here’s the man who knows everything about the subject and operates at least two or three or ten levels above that, so in a year, year and a half that you spend with him, if you learn 10-20 percent of it, you’ll get by well in your life. That is the kind of impact he has on you.

Chirag Shah, Architecture Student, Pune
This location is wonderful. Also has an amazing east facing view, but more than view, structure and planning is itself a puzzle, as we go inside we explore each space, be it open or closed, by the time i explored all the spaces i was amazed with plenty of spill over spaces, landscaping, the various levels and the use of skylight. Contoured site is very well used and maintained. I would surely try to study a course here, the campus and faculty both together are a wonderful team.
Surely it was a most memorable experience. I would just be very happy to spend more time here. Thank you for such a great visit.
Amar Gargesh,
“Even after doing my Transcreativity Workshops at several institutions over many years, at LLA it was a very fulfilling experience. It was I who received much. I could feel the very positive vibes and excellent culture in the environment and people. if at all I could succeed and add value to the extent I could, it was because of the superb support and high caliber of the performers enhanced by their passion. Finally any response would be inadequate without mentioning about the love and effection from the two warmest people I have met – Iqbal and Anuradha. Thanks, thanks, thanks!”

After a great amount of waiting in earnest, we were really glad to see a wonderfully set up bonfire blazing in the middle of the cafeteria… With a proper chimney to eat up all the smoke, what we now have as a lovely space includes good food, a view and a lovely fireplace to sit around and enjoy evenings of fun and music!

Richi Choraria, Alumnus
“The photo walk organised for us by Anuradha Ma’am and Iqbal Sir was an experience I’ll cherish all my life. This was my first photo walk and I’ve never felt more at peace, walking around Lovedale, and getting to see the smaller villages around Lovedale. It was an experience to get to talk to the locals there who reminded me of home. They invited us home and offered us food and it was so surprising to see people who were so open to having us home and making us feel comfortable in a new place. Thank you LLA for doing this for us. I will always cherish this day”

“I never knew that I could learn so much in six months. This course made me want to learn so much more and taught me the importance of light in each photograph. My passion for photography grew from just a hobby to being a profession. We’ve had ups and downs in this course where we wanted to learn more and there was not enough time to do it. But overall it’s been an amazing roller coaster ride and I loved it every bit. The best part was that it was a small group of students and we got close and became a family.”

“The time I’ve spent in LLA has been the best year of my life.
Whatever we got in college was just Amazing and we truly loved it, the sessions, explanations, critiques, constant feedback, the way we were taken care of, the love we got, the way they tackle when we face any problems, all the fun we had, the list can just go on. (We often used to cook in kitchen with Akkas, and I’ve never felt that it’s not my kitchen.)
We got to meet Iqbal sir, whose persona is something that can just be felt and can’t be described in words. This institute is the best Photography institute in the country for all these reasons and many more.
I constantly keep looking for reasons to come back to my College, my Home – Light & Life Academy.”

The architect has made use of the contour levels really well. I loved the way in which the buildings are connected, lot of stairs to climb through. I noticed that every opening had an amazing frame be it the valley view or building view. The orientation has helped in getting such amazing frames. I’d love to come back to take up the PG Photography course. The elements used are very simple. I like the way in which the whole campus blends in with the surrounding environment. Amazing Experience!!

“Ooty’s valley of farmland bordering dense forest, with fresh Western Ghats air filling the senses, form the canvas of the academy’s location. The well laid out interiors resonate the serene surroundings. The attention to detail is evident in every corner. The studios especially are to die for. One’s jaws are constantly dropped at the well laid out spaces available there to students, backed by ample equipment and props for any kind of photography situation. The main studio’s sheer size and scale with a catwalk for top angle shots spells out the seriousness and commitment invested by Iqbal and Anuradha into this labour of love. How I wish I was a student again and be able to enroll at LLA.”

“A community drum session set against the sky with rising moon, a workshop in origami or a workshop highlighting history of art– I would wonder how these form part of a curriculum of a professional photography academy. But this is what sets Light & Life Academy apart. The Academy prides itself in imparting “Life” lessons to its handpicked students. Activities are developed and delivered to ensure that we as students get inspired by a diversity of experiences that life has to offer and that each of our faculties like music, painting and sport contribute to a more rounded personality, a better human being and ultimately a “thinking photographer”.
– Faiz Ahmad, Student, Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Photography Programme.

“One is still absorbing the breathtaking beauty of the location as you arrive into LLA and are now completely charmed by the homeliness of the academy. One notices an air of joy as students interact with Iqbal sir and others in the faculty, as though talking to an elderly friend, the conversations delving into the depths of photography.

“As a former engineering student, turning my life towards the world of photography was a hard choice. So I chose LLA as my palette to nurture my art side. So I came, vulnerable and scared, everything felt like a blockbuster movie, huge and lifelike. Every faculty walked into our life and taught us photography from their point of view. With a wide spectrum of learning we became, in the end, professional photographers. Confident and with the mindset to capture the world in our canvas, we continue our journey.”
Richi Choraria
“This place will be closest to my heart forever! It’s like a dream we lived. I love how cute the akkas are, but most importantly how well everyone here has taught me something about life, happiness and time. I will never forget Iqbal sir’s theory of One. Thus, I would like to say that there is only one heaven and to me that heaven is LLA. This year will remain in our hearts always.”
Darshan Bafna
“It’s been 10 months in Ooty and I couldn’t have chosen a better life. I came to study with a lot of questions and excitement and now I’m leaving with a lot more excitement and lesser questions. Thanks to this amazing home and my guru Iqbal Sir for this beautiful journey that’s coming to an end.”

I am taking away so many lessons myself. The young photographers I interacted with showed passion, aesthetics and most importantly sensitivity in their work. Heartening. Photo-journalism is in good hands.
Satish Kumar Raju
LLA is not only a photography school, but a hub for photographers.
It is the place I go to, to see groups of photographers discussing an image and continuously talking about the elements that make the image look good and how to improvise a shot. This is a place that tunes a person to appreciate life and the art of living through photography.
LLA is not only a learning experience for students, but for the faculty as well!
Students from Mangalam School of Architecture and Planning, Kottayam, Kerala.
We selected ‘Light & Life Academy’ because it reflected the fundamental features for an ideal campus, especially for a photography school. But as we further explored the campus it was beyond the basics. The campus effectively shows how a campus should be planned in a highly sloped terrace. Besides the site planning, one of the most striking features was the use of colours. It perfectly merges with the surroundings, no buildings are seen isolated, furthermore it is clear that this is one of the most well designed building which shows sustainability as its extreme.
Sai.Vijay Deherkar, Kodambari.B.Bhurke, (B.V.C.O.A)
Talking about the Academy, the place where it is located gives a perfect justification to the photography school. The colours & the materials used in the building & spaces are perfectly used as per the environment. Through the point of view as an architecture student the terrains used are quite interesting and beautiful to create open, semi open as well as built space.
Akash Sharma, D.Y. Patil College of Architecture

Words really can’t express what I had learnt in LLA. It is definitely the best experience I’ve had. LLA has changed my perspective and the way I see things. More than photography this place and the people have made me learn to become a good human being.
Sneha Chandra
Mr. Desikan Krishnan’s class was one of the best classes we have had over the session. This class gave us an insight on how we must cover an event where there are other photographers as well covering the same frames. We also got to learn about the history of photography and photojournalism that has given us new perspectives.
Nidhi.H.Desai
Like great depth of field which gives you a sharp picture of the entire frame, you have sharpened my mind in photography. I came here with very little knowledge about photography and I am leaving with my head filled with lots of knowledge about awesome and creative photography. Thank you so much. Your gonna see me more often. I loved it!!
Saldanha Alirio
Wonderful workshop. Stayed within the concept “creative Photography”. Iqbal, totally dedicated and self – sharing, selfless, academy. A great help for photography enthusiasts – both amateur and aspiring professionals – to get such facilities and faculty to international standards – in India. Overall a great center LLA. May the academy produce great name’s in the photographic field in the coming years. all the very best!

Didn’t know that one week of learning something new would open up an entire new world, didn’t know I was capable of achieving a quality of pictures as never before, didn’t know that the world of photography has so much to offer, didn’t realise that it is never to late to begin a journey towards a new dream – but I know now and there is no going back! Thank you!

This workshop has been a beautiful experience – in terms of image we saw and images we captured in my camera. Thank you very much for being such a great teacher! This is going to be the starting point of my journey for capturing some images of this beautiful planet that we live on. Thank you again for providing the “Spark”.
D.Chandra Sekhar, Spot Shot Photography, Vijaywada
I have a high regard on Iqbal sir, but I never got an opportunity to attend his workshop. after this workshop my feelings on Iqbal sir are multiplying like any number. the space is not enough to write my feeling towards. Workshop is simply superb. My sincere thanks to Mrs & Mr.Iqbal to do like this. Hope to god to bless them and to these type of workshops more and educate many to photography like this. Thanks to the academy to give the opportunity to me tricks and tips of the product photography branch I learned a lot through this workshop. One tip in enough to do an assignment. Hope I will come here again to learn more. Thanking you once again, Mr.Iqbal and Light & Life Academy. Still who are receiving and giving in good food and hospitality, lot of things to say but I have no words to say…..
Sheetal Bhalla
It was a great learning experience in a beautiful surroundings. At the end of the workshop we could speak any photographic language. I do not have words to adequately express the uniqueness of my experience at Light and Life academy; last week. It was a tremendous learning experience and combined with the warmth of your hospitality, Iqbal’s sense of humor, helpfulness of your staff and of course the sylvan surroundings of Ooty, it has become an unforgettable week!
This note is to say a small ‘Thank You’!! Best Wishes!

The mock VIP visit session this morning was very interesting. We got a hands on experience of being a photo journalist. Firstly, I learned how to work under a time constraint. Secondly, I understand the competitive nature of this field. Writing captions and being critiqued right away was helpful too.
Sajeesh Radhakrishnan
Wished we had more classes with Mrs.Pankaja Srinivasan. It would be interesting to learn more about the editorial discussion that happen in newspapers and editorial ethics. Had an interesting critique session on the travel projects. She also gave ideas to how to get your work published on newspapers and regional columns.

Studio – an enclosed room with open minds makes an unimaginable photograph.
I didn’t know this before my first studio experience at lla. I had never seen or entered a studio before my first class at lla. I never knew I could control every thing inside a closed room and with just an simple understanding of light i could create amazing pictures. This experience has given me confidence that Photography is not just what is there but what you can create.
Amritha Jayasurya, Batch 17 – Post Graduate Diploma In Professional Photography student.
The studio experience was very frantic at first, but they say, ‘learning is better than knowing’. I learnt how important every detail is. And my level of imagination, with placement of products and light have improved to the next level. Learning to do photography in an enclosed room with lights and products is something I wish to carry forward.
Shawn Jacob, Batch 17, PG Diploma in Professional Photography
It was necessary for us photographers as creators of the image to understand what goes into creating a work of art; that patience and attention to detail was primary. We were also equipped to understand what colours went together and how certain colours evoke certain emotions. This probably is essential for any photographer hoping to create meaning through their images. Dr.Margaret and Dr.Swapna’s workshop helped us learn these essentials.
Prathiksha.M.K
Knowing the basic colours was always taught to us since kinder garden. And being a photographer, it was very important but the colour class that we had with Ms.Swapna and Ms.Margaret gave us a clear understanding of the colour wheel and how it has all evolved over the years. And the icing on the cake was the painting and collage activities that we were made to do.
Dilip Zaveri

I think this has been said so many times but I must say it too. The first few minutes of interacting with Punya ma’am felt like being hit with a tsunami of enthusiasm. The energy is infectious and inspiring. Regarding the classes itself, ma’am has this very direct approach that I personally liked. Right from the first day I felt extremely comfortable conversing in class whenever I needed to.

Thank you for everything!!

The moon light photography assignment was one of the best outdoor assignments which we did during the course at light and life academy. The moonlight assignment forced me to step out of my house during post evening till the very late night and observe the different and beautiful night life of Ooty which was completely different from the night life at modern city, in the end enjoyed a lot.

Thank you Punya ma’am for taking time off your busy schedule and teaching us the basics in Photography.
Your energy level gave us the needed motivation to start off our story at Light & Life Academy. You will always be one of our best teachers. You thought us to balance work and fun at the same time. You have been approachable and responded to us immediately regarding our submissions. Thanks for being a part of our journey and guiding us through the session. We truly couldn’t have asked for anyone better to start off the course for us and we hope to live up to expectations in our forthcoming projects.

I think this has been said so many times but I must say it too. The first few minutes of interacting with Punya ma’am felt like being hit with a tsunami of enthusiasm. The energy is infectious and inspiring. Beyond that I think right from the get go we all felt like she was one of us and that’s not just because she’s an alumnus. I think that feeling made it very easy for all of us to speak up in class and approach her outside of class too. Regarding the classes itself, ma’am has this very direct approach that I personally liked. She made everything very clear right at the start. Pay attention, don’t doze off and don’t interrupt. I usually think twice before asking questions in class, but I think right from the first day I felt extremely comfortable conversing in class whenever I needed to.

“It is not often that education rises beyond the boundaries of academics and pushes its students towards the path of self-actualization. This is a rare and commendable effort.”
