Nature Photography on Location

If you are a Nature lover, particularly the mountains, and have the passion to photograph the wilderness, this programme is for you. You must have been doing photography for a few years and you should be thorough with fundamentals of photography and the operation of your digital camera. You must be physically fit to hike a few kilometres every day.

The course will comprise a series of discussions and demonstrations on natural light, light metering, anticipating lighting conditions, use of colour, elements of composition, lens and perspectives, using a portable flash for creative results, planning, impact of weather conditions, etc. interspersed with photography sessions and critique of the work done. Photographic subjects will include landscapes, macro subjects like flowers and insects, natural abstractions, etc.

Teaching Methodology

On the first day, you will gather at the Academy for an orientation and introduction. This will be followed by a nature slide show and talk by the faculty. Post-lunch, you will leave for the tour with the faculty. For the next four days, sessions will start early in the morning and will end post-sunset. Every day, there will be critique session of the work done. On the sixth day morning, you will be back at the Academy for a final discussion.

What to bring

A 35mm digital SLR camera, wide, normal and tele lenses or wide to tele zoom lens, UV or skylight filters for your lenses (to protect the lens from dew, etc.), a portable flash like the Vivitar 285, 5 metre long sync cord, a sturdy tripod, cable release, compact torch light, an umbrella,extra batteries for camera / torch and battery chargers, warm clothing, including sweaters, windcheater, monkey cap, a few extra pairs of socks, sneakers / hiking shoes and an unbreakable water bottle with shoulder strap. Filters - circular polariser, two stop Graduated Neutral Density filter, three stop Graduated Neutral Density filter (with filter holders and lens adapter). A macro lens / extension tube (optional).
